Here we go again. Almost 2 years later and the dreaded email has arrived. Next week will be a distance learning week. Fear not. We have learned a lot from Round 1 and the time in between. I will be available to meet with kids this week during regular school hours to provide their speech therapy services online or over the phone where possible. Please reach out to me via class dojo, email ([email protected]) or phone 385-646-9108 to set up a time for me to meet with your child. Please indicate several available times so I can find one that works for both of us. Also please indicate if you would like to do a zoom meeting or telephone meeting. I look forward to hearing from you!

Hello. I just wanted to reach out and let you know that I love working with your children! This year has been a challenge for many of us in a variety of ways. Many of us have experienced a lot of new and scary things including earthquakes, raccoons, and pandemics. As I have talked to the children about their experiences this year, I see how resilient and strong they are. When I am having a rough day, it doesn't take long for one these great kids to lift my spirits. That is why I love my job! I may be able to help your child in some small way, but they bring a light into my life daily and I really appreciate that! Thank you for sharing your children with me! I wish you and your family good health, and lots of joy this holiday season! As always, please reach out if you have any questions or concerns!
I will be available for consultation via phone during SEP conferences. Please call me at 385-646-9108 if you would like to talk about your child's progress in speech. As always, I am available during school hours as well. If I do not answer, please leave me a message and I will return your call as soon as possible.
We have been given the go ahead to do virtual speech therapy using skype, zoom, or google meet. Please contact me via phone at 385-646-9108 or by email at nhmendes @graniteschools.org to set up a time for a virtual session. I also continue to be available for consult via phone and email during the shutdown.
I am working on creating a google classroom where I can easily assign students with homework specific to their needs. The site also has links to videos that support practice at home as well as give direction on how to say sounds. Your student will need to access google classrooms via their google account. If you do not know how to access that account, you can reach out to me or their homeroom teacher. Once the student has access to google classroom via their google account at granitesd.org, they will need to click on the plus (+) in the upper right hand corner and select "Join a class". It will request a class code. Our class code is qf5ella. Once in, I will give direction on how to access your student's homework. As always, I continue to be available for consult by phone at 385-646-9108 or by email at [email protected]. I hope you all are staying healthy and happy. I can't wait to see my students again!
I will be available for consultation during the two week closure. Please contact me via email at [email protected] or via phone at 385-646-9108 for a consult. Please get in touch with any other questions or concerns as well.
Mrs. Mendes Do you suspect your child has a speech and/or language disorder? Some parents may suspect a speech and/or language disorder, but do not know how to get their child the help they need. In the schools we have a referral process we must follow for students we suspect have a speech and language disorder. As the parent, you have a right to request testing for your child. The student's teacher may also make a referral if they believe your student has a speech and/or language disorder. Before a referral is made, the teacher is asked to do interventions with the child. For example, if the child has trouble making the /r/ sound, and is around the age of 8 or older, the teacher would work with the student to see if improvement could be made with the only the teachers help. If the student shows enough improvement, then the interventions with the teacher would continue and no referral for special education would be made. If the student continues to struggle with the /r/ sound, then the goal would be revised and a second intervention completed. If the student still continues to struggle with the /r/ sound after two interventions were completed by the teacher, a referral for special education would be made.
After a referral is made, a permission to test would be sent home. If the parent consented to the evaluation, testing would be completed within a 45 school day period. Following testing a meeting would be set up with the parent, teacher, principal or vice principal and the involved special education providers. At the meeting, the test results would be provided and a determination of eligibility for special education would be made. If a student qualifies for special education, they would then begin receiving services during school hours. If you believe your child has a speech and/or language disorder, please talk to their teacher so we can get some interventions started and move forward with the process as appropriate. It is so good to be back at Elk Run this year! I have enjoyed meeting with the students again this week as we get the ball rolling. Working with the children is what I love to do!
I hope you all enjoyed a nice restful summer. I enjoyed the time I had to spend with my family. We were able to get up to the mountains quite a bit and enjoy nature. I also spent a bit of time this summer learning some new research based therapy techniques and programs and hope to use them with some of the students this year. I look forward to seeing how they work and seeing all of our speech students make progress this year. As we get things started, I just wanted to share the mother load of speech pathology resources. I will put the link by the rest of my speech pathology links on the Homework page as well. It is found on the Speech Room News Blog and Jenna Rayburn, a speech language pathologist, put a lot of time and effort putting this together. If you have some time, you can take a look and find articles, therapy materials, and other information of all sorts that you could use to help your child. I can't wait to dig in a little deeper and find some great ideas! Thank you Jenna! As always, I just want to remind you that working with your child at home is essential to their progress. Please take advantage of the resources provided. As soon as I figure out where we need to start with your child at the beginning of the year, I will start sending home homework with them as well. Start looking for that in the next couple of weeks. 2016-2017 is going to be a great year! I look forward to working with you all! We have had a very successful year at Elk Run. The students have worked very hard and made some fantastic progress. Many have achieved their goals and been released from speech. We also found some new children who have benefited from our help. There are many others who continue to make progress and achieve milestones with their speech and language. This year has been very rewarding as students, with the help of parents and teachers, have found much success and progress. To maintain skills, it is very important to keep practicing at home this summer. I am sending a homework packet home with each child with some ideas on what you can do to practice skills learned this year in speech. You are also very welcome to use links on this website to obtain materials to practice your speech and language skills. This year has been very rewarding for me as I have been able to teach and learn from your children! Thank you for sharing them with me!
