I have had the privilege of meeting many of you already and have seen some great progress with your children's speech and language skill in the first 3 months of school! I really enjoy your children and the smiles they bring to my face! With winter break quickly approaching I wanted to share some ideas on how to maintain the progress your children have made this year over the upcoming long break.
1- Keep on reading. Your children are required to read at least 20 minutes a day in their classes. It is important to keep this up over the break. Encourage your child to read out loud for at least 10 minutes of that time while practicing to use their good speech sound. Sit with their child while they read so you can provide feedback as needed for their speech production. 2- Take a look at the homework page. I have provide links to some great speech resources. Find a page with your child's target sounds. Make flashcards for them and practice them daily. To make it more fun, you can make two copies of the words and play a game with them such as Matching or Go Fish. You can also have them say a word or two before they take a turn on other games you already have at home such as Chutes & Ladders or Candy Land. Taking a little time each day to focus on speech will help your child reach their goals more quickly and maintain the skills they have learned at school. Your help is vital keeping the momentum going. Thanks you so much. Please contact me with any questions you may have.

I will be at Elk Run Elementary on both Monday September 28th, 2015 and Tuesday September 29th, 2015 during parent teacher conferences. I would love to meet my fantastic student's great parents! Please stop by the speech room and say hello and see what your child does in speech! If you are unable to make it on those nights, feel free to stop by or call any time! I hope to see you soon!
We are up and running at Elk Run Elementary this year. It has been fun getting to know your children this school year. We started off the year with a getting to know you worksheet where I was able to learn some of your children's favorite desserts, books, and games. At the top of the game list was Minecraft and our number one dessert was ice cream (one of my favorites too!).
I have started sending home homework with some of your students already. The goal for our articulation students is to say 60 words per minute correctly, 30 phrases correctly, or 20 sentences correctly in one minute depending on the level they are working on. Their homework corresponds to what we are working on in speech class. At home, just set a timer for one minute and see how many they can do. Don't worry if they don't reach the target right away. We are working on accuracy and speed. When students do homework, I see much quicker progress in reaching their goal. I have not sent home homework if your student is still trying to learn how to produce the sound in isolation or if your student has language goals. They will come shortly. I have enjoyed getting to know these fantastic students at Elk Run and look forward to getting to know each of you! |
